DRAWING CONTEST 2023
DRAWING CONTEST 2023
Carlos Stohr Foundation
Open Air Drawing Contest
Valley of The Holly Spirit, Margarita Island
The third edition of the Fundastohr Drawing Contest was held in Valle del Espíritu Santo (the Valley of the Holy Spirit) on Margarita Island.
This competition follows the "Urban Sketchers" manifesto wherein the contestants must create an accurate depiction of a specific place at a specific time.
The drawing is created "in situ", outdoors, and the artist is directed to capture their environment - what they are observing at the moment. The buildings, the people, the nuances of light, and details that a casual passerby may not notice.
Portraying these observations using simple drawing materials in an outdoor environment has many variables: The weather, the comfort of position, moving elements, people observing, competitors nearby, all things that can distract or impede the contestant. The successful artist will exhibit the focus and skills to create a visual description of their surroundings that transports the viewer to that location and evokes emotion.
This prize-winning watercolor of the Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Virgen del Valle (Basilica of Our Lady of the Virgin of the Valley) was created in three hours under the scorching November sun on a busy Saturday morning.
"Painting on-site is a challenging experience, in every sense. The odds are usually against you. Things are constantly changing so you have to act fast to quickly capture the most important details of what you have in front of you. The reward is that the final painting will take you back to that 11 experience every time you see it." Darlenys Castillo
